Apple can release "cool" things but the real money is in business. Unless they get their heads in the business world, they'll remain a sub-10% market share company. The 18-34 home computer market can only provide Apple with a limited amount of profit:

    http://www.idiotarchive.com/archive/372224.asp

But does Apple care? Do they WANT a marketshare that big? Do they NEED a marketshare that big? I'm not sure that their business model requires them to grow in such a way. And in fact, it may be detrimental to the product they put out, and the speed at which they do it. Seems to me they're doing just fine with the marketshare they have.

@Vghty I'd really like to thank you for your latest post. I'm finding it more and more difficult to keep track of all my sources as my research progresses. I find it difficult to adapt to new methods, which is probably why I still just keep all my saved PDFs in a folder and have to go hunting down the one I need. It's not always convenient and I've only just gotten used to using Microsoft Word's bibliography tool, which is decent. They need to have more native support for different formats (some of us use Harvard instead of the ones listed). I've had to find other formats online and plug them into the Microsoft User folder. This brings me to a question about Bookends. Does it have support for multiple referencing/citation formats? Is Harvard one of them? That will really help me make my decision about whether or not to purchase it. I'm trying Zotero right now (they've just released a standalone version that doesn't require Firefox). Thanks for the info!

    Probably mentioned before:

iLife '07 will have CoreAnimation at a center of it's core [probably] and that is obviously in Leopard only. iLife '07 will be released when Leopard gets released.

Yay, more whining till Leopard.

In my tiny private HS if your phone was out / rang in class they confiscated it until "the next school day" even if that meant a 2 week long break.

Even then, a parent had to come retrieve it for the student.

I asked the principal once what we were to do in the event of an emergency over break without our phone and she said "I'd recommend staying home"

Based on murmurings and mooings on the pro sites, I reckon Apple will lose some customers to Avid, if they had originally come from Avid some time in the last 10 years. They're talking about going back to Avid, not to Avid...Funny how Avid announced the $995 upgrade to MC from FCP just days before FCPX was demoed :)
I used both professionally and cant wait to see how Avid reacts with version 6 :)

I also reckon every kid who has used iMovie in the last few years will start using FCP X in about July. This is the next generation of video editors, and they will far outnumber Avid users. They will be making movies for web distribution. They will be flooding the film schools. They will also have the mad skillz (look at me, sounding like a teenager :D) to turn things over really quickly, something which is appreciated in today's editing environment.
They said the same thing about Graphic Design, 3D (Gaming and SFX) and Web-Authoring. Once these options were easily available to the kids in high-school, a lot of us thought that the market would be saturated.
Ive had the task of interviewing and working with the younger gens for the past 10 years. I also get to teach them at local college.
Old or new, they all have to apply for a job.
From my experiences the older gen has been networking longer and gets first dibs on most projects :)

Apple has built FCP X for people who have never used film and probably never will so the metaphor needed to go. Bye-bye bins, hello "smart folders". And a big hello to the do-deca-core, 8TB, 32GB Mac Pro everyone can now justify purchasing.Great! Now I can use the 32GB of RAM Ive loaded in all our 12core MP's ;)

While a neat technology, it's a bit of a stretch to really call this "glasses-free 3D". Unlike the 3DS, where actual illustion of depth is present, this is just changing the perspective on a rendered 3D object on the screen based on head position. The image that the left and right eye sees are the same, thus no actual "3D" effect.

To be honest, you have just countered your own argument, none of the 3D technology is actually true 3D, its all illusions. They both have the 3D effect just done in different ways. I'm not saying the 3DS isn't great but it only gives the effect if you look straight at it.

    i7 920 is 2.66 ghz stock but I have it OC'd to 3.8 ghz.

oh ok nice. yeah you could try to push it to 4.0 ghz. it's always nice to start with a 4 :)

i was waiting for a os x gpu client before i did it. seems much more efficient than cpu folding

well from what i've read, that just isn't the case. GPUs use much more power than CPUs. the most efficient for the points is CPU folding (bigadv). the only advantage GPU folding has is that certain work units are only GPU, so if you are looking to work towards a certain disease, this might mean something to you

Yes you are right, the husband is obviously guilty of attempted murder. I'm just saying that in this case the guy should be let go. Call me a monster who believes in eugenics, but people who are stupid pollute the gene pool don't deserve to exist. Someone who throws themselves on a car is, to use your termonology, prima facie guilty of being an idiot; and therefore does not deserve to exist and pollute the gene pool (in my belief system at least).

    -Don

Stop polluting the forum gene pool with this tripe. Were I on a jury deliberating your post, I'd find you guilty of being an idiot.

I've always thought all along that Apple was going to have to pay Nokia something or settle this simply because other cell phone manufacturers using similar technology have already settled with Nokia.

The question now is why has Apple been so stubborn? Do they know something we don't or are they risking the farm on this one?

With the Nokia/Microsoft deal in place, is it possible Nokia had no intention of ever settling with Apple like they did with other cell phone manufacturers? Hmm, makes me wonder.

And of course, I'm waiting for the other shoe to drop which will be Apple filing another lawsuit against Nokia after losing the first round of their countersuit.

And anyone know what's going on with the Apple lawsuit against HTC? That could conceivably have broad implications on the entire Android OS itself and Google.

Now my final question would be, is it possible Apple could file suit against BOTH Microsoft and Nokia when the Windows Phone 7 Nokia phones come out? I mean, Steve Jobs said it himself that Apple had patented the iPhone to the hilt and intended to protect all those patents.

I somehow think this is all going to end up in a wash in the end and I just realized I've given myself a patented headache typing all this.

    http://graphics8.nytimes.com/images/2010/03/03/technology/bits-suepatent2/bits-suepatent2-blogSpan.jpg

As I remember when this first came out, Nokia wanted both money and access to Apple's patent portfolio. Apple did not want to give Nokia access to Apple's patent portfolio and wanted to pay Nokia less money (Note - Nokia wanted to get a percentage of each phone sold (lot of money for a smart phone) while Apple wanted to give a lesser fixed amount).

Getting tired of these incessant 660mb downloads.

But I finally figured out how Apple gets you to keep updating... they always promise a battery fix along with the other crap you really don't care about. By now I should be running for 30 days on a single charge.

I want it in late June, early July at the most. This Autumn rumor is really peeing me off. Think I may even queue up for this one. Actually I won't. There'll be local press at the Apple Store and the last thing I need is to be caught on film standing in line like a total douche with a bunch of other douches!

why does it make you a douche to wait in line for one of the most coveted devices in the world so you dont have to wait weeks to get it??? I for one wont do it, but i dont blame those who do...im just going to order ASAP so i dont have to wait weeks to get it

Internet data usage is increasing and internet data caps are decreasing. This doesn't seem good...

I agree. I'm not interested in using what little bandwidth the phone company gives me to play music I could just transfer to my phone from my computer.

I hope it's more than that.

How would you like "transparent carbon" ?

Scotty has been at Apple working on the formula for transparent aluminum according to this video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v9kTVZiJ3Uc&feature=related). As you can see, the Materials Dept at Apple doesn't get the preview versions of Lion

I used to work with carbon fiber racing shells.Very pretty, but scratchable and can crack, especially when you start making little skinny cutouts like for keyboards and laptops that would then be abused in bags. Unless Apple gets the good stuff and makes some engineering changes, I don't think pure CF is a good idea. Plus, they'd have to transition their whole line to it, get rid of their unibody plants and paint the cases...

I think using the existing unibody plants, with upgrades, to make liquid metal/CF casings is more likely, cheaper, and nicer looking. If its even possibly to subject metal bonded to CF to unibody techniques. I am not an engineer.

Start small, end big. Why would they want to start big and end small?

I know, but new iPod games, a new Nano case, some slightly bigger iPods and a video streaming device + the iTunes movie store? Well it's barely worth sitting here for. ;)

There has been much talk about this "True" Video iPod. Isn't there already a Video iPod? What makes it True vs. Fake. I know there have been rumors and Photoshop mockups on what others think should be the True Video iPod and they show patents that Apple file. But I am not sure I want to replace the Scrool Wheel with a touch screen, I do like having tactile feedback on where my hand is, as well you can really smuge up the screen you are looking at, and it is easy to loose that little stylist. While I am waiting for a Core 2 Duo Mac Book Pro and I may get an iPod for me at the same time. I am not sure what we would be really missing with the true video iPod except for shorter battery life and a smugged screen.

What makes this a "True" video iPod? Simple: it's an iPod that is DESIGNED FOR VIDEO. Larger screen, possibly better resolution, larger storeage space...

The current "iPod Video" wasn't ever intended for video, it was "adapted" from previous generation iPods to be able to show video. But screen size (as many users have noted throughout it's existance) makes it an "eh" choice for watching movies or TV shows.

Not to mention, your "smudged screen" senario? You've obviously never used a touch screen before. They don't smudge, unless your hands are dirty.

What I want to see from WWDC:

    1) New PowerMac (Mac Pro?).
    2) New xServer.
    3) Updates for MacBook Pros, iMac, MacBook, Mac Mini Lines.
    4) New iPods.
    5) Something cool and unexpected from the preview of Leopard.
    6) Steve in his usual smart and practical black turtle neck.

Then I'd be happy :D
apparently you've been taken your happy pills. :D :p
