That's okay. No worries. I just get a little defensive when I spend $5000 on a new system, and then see you posting about how it'll be better with Clovertown. But that's my problem I guess.

    Anyway, it's all cool.

    Yeah... me too! LOL!! :D

As for Toast and Handbrake performance... well that's all well and cool, but I have little use for those apps on such extreme level. I can't think of an instance where I would run Toast more than once or twice a week. Maybe I should get netflix and build a library of illegal movies?? Nah... I will be using my Macpro for creative work instead. FCP, Motion, Shake, Lightwave, Maya etc... I realize that comparisions with Handbrake and Toast are being made just to show how the cores are utilized, but frankly, I don't give a damn about those apps. They show me nothing. Now if you get into comparing heavy duty Professional apps that take full advantage of all cores at native speeds, then I'm excited. For example, Newtek Lightwave has been announced as UB "very soon". Lightwave is a fully multicore application that should test the strength of the Macpro when it comes to rendering. I'd love to see those benchmarks compared to G5!

Who wants to go through the trouble of doing a software change to unlock their phone.
It is a code you are given to unlock the cell. NOT a software change, unless the carrier changes the entire phone software.

What by the years end? That we stop reading the same "PowerBook G5 next Tuesday!" non-starting done-to-death joke?? :p

No kidding. That's getting really tired now. It's the new "first post" carp we used to have to deal with a while back.

Logically, the next question is if ZFS' 128 bits is enough. According to Bonwick, it has to be. "Populating 128-bit file systems would exceed the quantum limits of earth-based storage. You couldn't fill a 128-bit storage pool without boiling the oceans."
wow. boiling the oceans. there's a thought that never crossed my mind ;)

Was trying for a long time to find this article:

    http://db.tidbits.com/article/8751

A good story of how Microsoft got screwed into paying the $1. Long story short, because of them not controlling a market for once and not having the largest publisher of music to get tunes from, Universal held MS's feet to the fire and said pay up or forget it.

    Good read nonetheless.

In what case is inclusionism not a good policy? Being consistent in our thinking and morality is a sign of a logical and sound mind.
I can not think of a single case where making arbitrary exceptions is a good practice.

I have no problem being exclusionist to bad ideas like rape and paedophilia

Why wait (and risk them not living up to your expectation)? Just pretend Apple dumbed it down now and start your move now - like that's the only thing "keeping" you on the Mac platform

Maybe there is, or maybe this is the final straw given Apple's trend in dropping professional grade products. Either way, his decision, no need for the . Thought we were all adults here. :)

How is it biting them in the ass? Android is the fastest growing OS with a larger share than IOS. I think it's been a very succesfull strategy.

Smartphone OS, yes (iPhone vs. Android phones).

iOS as whole (iPads + iPods + iPhones) kills Android numbers though. By LARGE margins.

-- How about some new textures for the case, such as brushed copper? I think that would look sharp.

The day Apple makes a copper computer is the day it goes out of business.

Seriously DONT GET THAT COMPUTER WET. Leave it inside if it's humid out...:D

I don't want my computer looking like the statue of liberty.

AnandTech is putting a lot of emphasis on this FB-DIMM issue. Their Conroe vs Xeon comparisons are poor given that they maximize the FB-DIMM latency "problem" by using a Mac Pro with only two RAM slots occupied. Seems as though they have an agenda to exaggerate the importance of this technical issue.

No they wouldn't. They have to prove likelihood of confusion, not actual confusion. Actual confusion is evidence of likelihood of confusion, but it's not necessary.

Yes sir, that's why I explicitly said "could" have to provide proof, because I read of cases where evidence of actual confusion ended up being one of the methods used.

Thank you, as always, for making the clarification in any case.

The other presenters just had to toss months of planning out the window and scramble to reschedule events w/less than a weeks notice during the industry's biggest annual convention. Hopefully the members of the audience that signed up to see the original line-up will be able to make it to all the reschedule events and, on top of that, everyone going to the SuperMeet has now paid money for tickets to what is nothing more than an Apple PR event.

Dick move by Apple but all will be forgiven as long as they release the holy grail of editing on Tuesday. If they preview 'iMovie Pro' lord help them...

To be fair to Mark (the head of Post at Bunim/Murray) there really isn't anything he could say due to the NDA. Just because what he saw of the new FCP might not lead him to believe it would work in Bunim/Murray's current workflow doesn't mean it might not be awesome for someone else's work flow. It was a tough spot for Mark to be in and I'm not exactly sure why he even kicked off the meeting with "I was there, but don't ask me about it because I'm under NDA". He could've never even have brought it up and it wouldn't have altered the course of the conversation at all.

    Lethal

But Apple have slipped him a little something to drop it in, s it will get picked up by sites like this... and so the hype begins.

    I have a question.

If Kentsfield is a relation of the Conroe part (ie. Core 2 Duo) then will it be capable of being configured in a pair to create a "octo" core machine?

Surely that will require a Xeon class processor (like a quad version of the Woodcrest)?

Most likely not. The other question is: Is it easy to plug a Kentsfield into a machine designed for Conroe (not for the end user, but for Apple), and is it easy to plug two Clovertowns into a machine designed for two Woodcrests?

The problem that has always existed, not just with Android, is that the carriers customize the OS, release it with a phone, and you can forget about getting any updates for it. Maybe one update for the lifetime of the device, if you are lucky. My HTC TouchPro 2 has only seen in almost 2 years just one update to WM 6.5, and it was not even close to the most current revision at that time.

This just shows that carriers and manufacturers don't want to keep maintaining their phones. They want to sell and forget, and push a new model out the door.

    Sad, but true... :(

Yup. It is ridiculous how fast they just want to push out new devices instead of focusing on more important things.

    Yeah! That's what'll happen!

Or they'll do further research and realize that the implications in this SINGLE ARTICLE might not be 100% true.

To the everyday user this means NOTHING as they have no knowledge of what open truly means, and therefore can't take advantage of it.

To the users who actually have the knowhow to utilize open source operating systems, this might mean a minor hinderance, but not a complete game changer.

And for clarification, the former is the vast majority.

Did no one notice the obvious bias in this article? It's slanted, and the author clearly thinks that Google has been wrong this entire time.

The everyday user has been buying Android phones in large numbers because they're cheap and are available on more carriers. This is not about everyday users, it's about the Fandroids who have been screaming "'Open' good, 'closed' bad!!" at the top of their lungs for the last three years.

I stand by my three groups: 1indiscriminate Apple-haters (like you), 2people who just want a team to root for: "Go Android!!" Right or wrong, and 3the true believers in the open-source religion.

Now as I said before, the only truly "open" phones would be FreeRunners that Stallman assembles in his Mom's basement from components gleaned from dumpsters and hands out for free, so I have no idea what new savior they'll turn to to save them from the tyrant Jobs. Be funny if it was Microsoft!

And no, I see no "bias" in the articleI think you're using the Rupert Murdoch definition: "Facts I don't want anybody to hear."

Maybe not the worst, but definitely the most useless.

Spotlight does a so much better job.

Agreed. I keep my dock pretty sparse so if the app ain't there it's only a few keystrokes away.

The new Launcher is just one of those eye-candy apps. It'll be the first thing I delete.

So to post my top bets for WWDC...

    1) A much clearer roadmap for 64 bit support in Mac OS X. I believe they will outline full 64 bit support across all non-10.4 deprecated frameworks (I believe in the initial release of 10.5). Of course it will also fully support 32 bit applications run side by side with 64 bit applications.

    2) Resolution Independent UI will be ready for main stream use with display products possible with in the next year or two (would love to be surprised with 150-200 DPI or so display of course).

    3) Quartz 2D Extreme will be ready for main stream use along with some good news on the OpenGL front.

    4) Full roll out of the unified user interface look and fell across all frameworks and Apple applications (at least most).

    5) Improved Quartz API to allow for more advanced window styles and effects.

    6) PowerMac replacement with Quad core model... a true workstation class system (likely similar enclosure to what we have now in the PMG5).

    ... gotta go.
