I'm still wondering if there are xserves in there.
I heard Apple has been using xserves almost nowhere. Websites and stuff run on Sun's servers.

...I am running a GeForce 6800GT in my Digital Audio G4.

dang, totally forgot about that. i've even linked that before. very useful thread! (click the link in his signature)

...The Geforce 6200 I have doesn't work in MDD's for some odd reason but does work in all other AGP G4 towers.

didn't know that. i've use some 6200s before, but have never owned/used a MDD... wonder why it won't work? did you tape the pins, tried all the other tricks? voltage problem perhaps?!? learn something new every day around here. long live PPC!

They NEED 2 versions of iCade - one with joystick, the other with a Trackball and Knob... ;)

100% agree. I've seen some of those self contained TV video games that are basically a joystick with RCA cables coming out the back that have a combo joystick & paddle - the joystick rotating to be the paddle. Never tried it though. (I think it was the Pole Position one.)

But not being able to spin the knob on Tempest looses some of the nostalgia for me too.

There honestly is no need to update the iPhone line EVERY year at this point. iPhone 4 was the biggest jump and I don't see a reason to jump again so soon, especially after Verizon customers JUST recived access to the phone. I can understand updating the models to include 4G, but at this point 4G IMHO is not needed. It's not a mature enough standard to expect iPhone owners to have smooth service with Verizon and AT&Ts 4G networks. I see them both being great next year, but it'd be a forced move on Apples part to update so soon.

They should buy one of those dedicated GPS/Maps companies like Garmin or TomTom and integrate their software into iOS5. Microsoft will be doing it soon with OVI and i suspect Google will be doing something similar with their new vector based version of Google MAPS.

It will be a shame for apple to be left out of this game.

TomTom or Garmin wouldn't help Apple that much. Garmin and TomTom both license either Teleatlas or Navteq for road data and they don't have access to much else since most of their devices are "offline" devices. Google has used Google Maps to build up a lot of data (they currently provide their own traffic on Google maps by curating all the data from mobile GMaps users, etc). A lot of people are missing out on the fact that "maps" that people expect today is a lot more than just road data. Getting access to road data is not that complicated for Apple to obtain. The rest is very complicated. Currently Google is the leader in this and there really isn't a close second (although Bing is doing some innovative things in this area).

Meanwhile in the world of tablets, RIMM is having problems:

Earlier this week it was a breakout of sudden playbook death syndrome.

Users report BlackBerry PlayBooks failing to restart (http://www.infoworld.com/d/mobile-technology/users-report-blackberry-playbooks-failing-restart-992)
    APRIL 25, 2011

"Some BlackBerry PlayBook tablets that Research in Motion released last Tuesday are suddenly failing to restart. Some even simply stop working while in use and do not restart. InfoWorld.com experienced this issue with its own review unit after three days of use, and moe than a dozen users have reported the identical problem on RIM's BlackBerry.com support site.

The initial reports began on the evening of April 20, one day after the PlayBook was released, though most users reported the problem after a few days of activity. For units experiencing this "sudden death syndrome," the PlayBook's indicator light double-blinks when turned on but the screen remains black."

Now the company can't deliver its phones and the CEO is having a hard time with questions about security:

BlackBerry maker starts to feel serious squeeze (http://www.brecorder.com/world/global-business-a-economy/12934-blackberry-maker-starts-to-feel-serious-squeeze.html)
    FRIDAY, 29 APRIL 2011

"Research In Motion is starting to feel a serious squeeze. The BlackBerry maker is hemorrhaging market share and just warned product delays are hurting sales. The pressure is showing: its co-CEO recently stormed off a TV interview when asked about security issues. RIMM needs to compose itself if a new tablet and operating system are to keep the firm relevant.

Cutting estimates just weeks after issuing them hardly inspires confidence. The company warned hold-ups bringing out new handsets scared off customers. Those still buying RIM devices in the United States and Latin America are choosing cheaper, lower-end ones. As a result, earnings per share will actually shrink slightly, despite the booming market for smartphones."

    ...

Poor RIMM. I think the end is near.

I think Apple's policy allows for users to opt-in to sharing their personal data.

That ability is there. But rather than give its customers a choice of opting in, FT would rather sell your information without your approval.

This is similar to how I feel about Exchange/Outlook. Companies want to use Exchange only because it is one stop shopping for IT. In a corporate environment, Exchange is so inadequate as to be laughable. This is from a user stand point. It message/email tracking are simply pathetic IMO. It really feels like it is a personal email system forced to live in a corporate environment.

I have used Notes extensively as a database platform and have been dually impressed with what it can do. In one case, it was a bug/change tracking system and the implementation of the database was simply sweet. I have never heavily used the email system but going from Groupwise to Exchange was a shock in just how bad Exchange was.

    Steven

When I start looking for a new job - the first question I'll ask is which Universal Messaging Platform have you deployed in your Enterprise? If they answer "Notes" I'll know the following about their organziation:

    1. They care more about the dollar than about usability and employee satisfaction
    2. The VP of IT is probably sleeping with the IBM rep
    3. The business only uses it because they don't know any better (they've been there too long and have never used anything other than Notes and AOL).
    4. They think that Notes databases are cool and hip and truly believe Access is an enterprise level database
    5. And finally, they are so damn stupid they probably have Lotus 123 and Word Perfect as their "Office Suite"

Also, what is so bad about the iOS notification system? I just hit "Close" if I don't care about a notification at that time.

Let's say I'm driving in my car through a city. Every 20 yards a huge window pops up blocking the view onto whatever I do (mostly Google Maps because I try to find my way) just to tell me there are 5 new Wifi Hotspots in my vivcinity and I have to close it while I'm driving. This is the reason why I have to constantly go to Settings/Wifi/Off and then switch Wifi on again later.

Also every stupid text comes up with a huge blob that blocks the view and I have to have a hand free to close the window.

At the same time when my Phone is in a dock there is no way to easily see what and how many messages are waiting. I have to slide, type my pin, navigate to home screen and look at the little red indicator on various apps.

It's just ten years behind what others have.

    I'm guessing this is sarcasm.

It is a toy. You can't seriously think that professionals are going to depend on Photoshop for iPad and throw away their computer can you? That's like throwing away your computer because GarageBand is also available on the iPad, and attempting to produce an album on an iPad. Impossible.

No matter what Steve says, it is a toy! I think it is brilliant you can do these things on such a simple product for the average user, but they are nothing more than for... the average user.Exactly.

    Regarding Health Care:

Bill Maher New Rule: Not Everything in America Has to Make a Profit (http://www.huffingtonpost.com/bill-maher/new-rule-not-everything-i_b_244050.html) 23July09

Just how exaggerated is the following?:

Wow. That article pretty much sums up the way I see it all. Great read.

My problem with it isn't that businesses and people are in it for a profit (well, in certain areas). Hey, you got to make something. It's that the only thing that matters is the highest profit possible, at all costs.

If a company has made a profit of $15,000,000, but they were wanting $16,000,000 based on nothing more than their accountant's predictions, they won't settle for that $15m. They will lay off people, make others work longer, and cut salaries and benefits to achieve their "goal". It's no longer about making money...it's about making excessive money for the upper management and pleasing shareholders.

You see it in the stock market all the time. A company announces that it's profits will fall short of some astronomical assumed figure, and shareholders start selling off the stock because large profits are worse than huge profits.

While this isn't in the private market, and I'm sure someone (we know who) will find a way to say this is OK, it reminds me of a recent story I read. I think it was Texas Tech or something required all of their faculty to take a pay freeze, yet gave the football coach a half-million dollar a year raise. Not $50k, not $100k...$500k a year added to his already $1.5m a year salary. All while telling teachers there was not enough money to do anything for them. And it wasn't a contracted raise, if I recall, it was a "promise". The very fact that the coach would take that says enough to me. That's pretty sick.
